Awards for South West green workplace champions
Employees from across the South West who have helped make their workplaces greener will be honoured at a special conference later this month.
The Champions for Change at Work event will offer unions and businesses in the region examples of how they can make their workplaces more carbon-friendly. Speakers include leading environmentalist Jonathan Porritt and there will be workshops offering practical examples for people to follow.
The conference in Bristol will also hear from nine workers who have been nominated as a Champion of Change. They are:
- Phil Hammant and Martin Roberts from J and S Marine based in Barnstable, Devon
- Sally Childs from NHS Dorset in Dorchester
- Steve Crawshaw and Pete Fryer from Bristol City Council
- Wayne Walters from Guys Marsh Prison in Dorset
- Martin Roberts from BECTU union in Bristol
- Kevin Maggs from A & P Group in Falmouth, Cornwall
- Pierre Fox from AWP, Bristol
Details on how they helped green their workplaces are below. Each nominated person will give a short presentation on their work to the day-long conference which takes place on November 19. The event has been organised by the South West TUC green workplaces initiative in conjunction with @Bristol and the South West RDA.
Nigel Costley, South West TUC Regional Secretary, who will give the welcoming address, said: “These are tremendous examples of how together workers and employers can help cut carbon – and not jobs.
“We need to get serious if we are to face up to our environmental challenges and if we wish to create an economy which makes the best of all its resources. The efforts of these champions for change and of the Green Workplaces initiative shows what can be achieved.”
Also speaking at the conference will be TUC Deputy General Secretary Frances O’Grady and Haydn Young, CEO of training firm Gaia Active.
There will be workshops on travel planning, how to promote behaviour change, improving resource efficiency and effective communication and negotiation.
Registration for the conference is free and open to all. Email Beth Callinan on bcallinan@tuc.org.uk for details.

We are planning an event in the New Year where you will be able to find out how water is used in the workplace – from washrooms to processes. We plan to consider how much it costs, how and where savings can be made, and how you and your organisation can tap into resources to help it be more water efficient.
We are still finalising the details but we can tell you it will be a half day (morning) event and will be held in Bath (well where else could we hold a water related event?). As always it will be open to all union members and we will be offering you the chance to bring your managers with you. More details will be sent to you soon, but in the meantime if you want to pre-register your interest you can email Frances at frobertson@tuc.org.uk
