Going Green is the way to turn around the region’s economy, according to the South West TUC.

Employers and trade union reps will next month (October) be attending a conference promoting a sustainable manufacturing recovery with the environment at its heart.

Coming a month after the South West was designated the UK’s first Low Carbon Economic Area, the event is being held in Bristol on October 14th.

Nigel Costley, Regional Secretary of the South West TUC, said: “Even as manufacturing is being hit by the recession, trade unions and good employers are working hard to keep jobs and develop skills.

“A large part of this work is being channeled into raising environmental awareness and moving towards more sustainable workplaces. The conference will consider how best to consider these changes.”

The event will tackle energy efficiency, reducing waste, lean production, renewable energy and making low carbon products, as well as discussing the need for a decent public transport system to offer a range of good employment opportunities.

Speakers include TUC Deputy General Secretary Frances O’Grady, unite the union Deputy General Secretary Jack Dromey, EEF Head of Climate Policy Gareth Stace and South West RDA chief executive Jane Henderson, and there are workshops run by SW Manufacturing Advisory Service, Business Link and Regen SW.

The conference is aimed at manufacturing companies and employers, union members and reps, union officers and support organizations. There are a few spaces still available by registering online at www.greenworkplacessouthwest.org.uk.
